How to read beer freshness dates before you buy
Beer packages may show packaged-on, canned-on, bottled-on, best-by, or Julian dates. Freshness matters most for hop-forward and delicate beer.

To judge beer freshness, first identify what the printed code means. A packaged-on date tells you when the beer entered the can or bottle. A best-by date tells you the brewery's preferred quality window. Some packages use a Julian code that requires translation.
Where should you look?
Check the bottom of a can, bottle shoulder, label edge, carton, or case tray. Draft beer may not show a date to the customer, so ask when a seasonal or hop-forward keg was tapped.
A code is only useful if you can read it. Clear month-day-year dates serve customers better than unexplained production codes.
What is a Julian date?
A Julian production code often uses the day of the year. For example, 001 means January 1 and 365 means December 31 in a non-leap year. The year may appear before or after the day number. Brewery formats vary, so check the brewery's explanation rather than guessing.
Which beer needs the closest date check?
Prioritize freshness for:
- IPA and other hop-aromatic beer
- Fresh-hop releases
- Delicate pale lager
- Unpasteurized beer with a short stated window
- Any beer stored warm or in bright light
A strong stout or mixed-fermentation beer may age intentionally, but age-worthy is not a universal property of dark or strong beer.
Is beer unsafe after the best-by date?
A quality date is not automatically a safety deadline. Flavor can fade, oxidize, or shift. A leaking, bulging, broken, or badly corroded package should not be consumed. Follow the brewery's guidance.
How does storage affect the date?
Warmth speeds chemical change. Light can damage hop compounds in susceptible packaging. Refrigeration and darkness help preserve quality. Read how to store beer at home.
What if there is no date?
Ask the retailer or brewery, especially for hop-forward beer. Look for signs of turnover and cold storage. A dust-covered package in a warm display is a different bet from a refrigerated new release.
Related questions
Is canned beer fresher than bottled beer?
Package type alone does not determine freshness. Date, oxygen control, storage, and seal integrity matter.
Does beer expire?
Most beer changes rather than suddenly expiring. The intended flavor can decline well before a safety issue appears.
Should IPA be refrigerated?
Yes. Cold storage helps slow the loss of hop aroma and other flavor changes.
